This month was full of news, as we just had E3. They announced a ton of new games coming to the Nintendo Switch and with such a large lineup, there seemed to be something announced for everyone. There were surprises for both the good and bad - some of which will be covered below. Here I will also give my overall thoughts on E3, list games to look out for, and go over what I saw that was interesting to me from the announcements.
Here is the video of the Nintendo Direct:
Games I am Most Excited For:
Luigi's Mansion 3 - Late 2019
Links Awakening - September 20th
Contra Rouge Corps - September 24th
Pokemon Sword and Shield - November 15th
Animal Crossing - March 20th 2020
Minecraft Dungeons - Spring 2020
This E3 direct really had something for every major genre. First of all, for those who like Smash Bros, a big announcement was made that Dragon Quest characters will soon be available for Smash. It should also be noted that Dragon Quest 11 received a release date of September 27th. There was even more Smash news with the announcement and subsequent teaser of Banjo Kazooie! This is huge and something not many saw coming - I, for one, am loving the Microsoft and Nintendo friendship right now.
One of the more anticipated games for me was also shown off during this direct - Luigi's Mansion 3. I loved the original on the GameCube and can't wait to play another game in this series. This game looks like it brings a couple new mechanics into play - things like the new vacuum or the slam feature; they have also added Gooigi who can slip through metal vents and spikes - this addition brings the option of a co-op mode into to the mix. From what I've seen this game looks like it has more content than the original, which is always welcome. They also introduced online and local multiplayer into this game.
The next game for me is Link's Awakening, which is a game I think everyone should experience. This is a remake of the classic Game Boy game with a fresh new coat of paint that looks amazing! They have also added new content in the form of earned chambers that can be combined to make your very own dungeons and earn more rewards.
One of the surprises of the direct was the game Contra Rogue Corps, coming on September 24th with online and local multiplayer. With this also comes the Contra Anniversary Collection, which includes 10 retro Contra games available right now!
Of course this direct had more info on the new Pokemon games Sword and Shield coming on November 15th. I will have a separate post early next week with all the details we know about these games, as there is a lot of content to cover; I am really excited for these games. Pokemon Let's Go! got me back into the Pokemon series and I am excited to continue that.
A series that I have not played at all, but is something I am considering this time is Animal Crossing: New Horizon. This looks like a fun adventure game with plenty of ways to be creative and build your island up. I for one love city builders and games which allow you to be creative. This game, however, has been pushed out to March 20th 2020.
Minecraft Dungeons is coming to the Switch in spring 2020. This looks like a Diablo style game but with Minecraft graphics; it can be played with local or online multiplayer.
The biggest surprise of all, and something that left everyone speechless, was the announcement of a sequel to Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It is currently being worked on, and there was even a short trailer to go with the announcement. Nintendo said the team had so many ideas for DLC's they decided to just make a sequel, which is amazing news! This is something that I am so excited for and cannot wait until it's released!
Finally, I am personally not too interested in these games but I felt some people would appreciate them being mentioned and might be interested:
Trials of Mana which is another RPG from Square Enix coming early 2020, as well as the original collection available now.
Witcher 3 is also coming to Switch in 2019.
Fire Emblem now has a set release date of July 26th.
The rest of the Resident Evil games are coming to Nintendo Switch this year.
One of the most anticipated games for a lot of people is Astral Chain which is being released on August 30th.
Another game that a ton of people I know are excited for is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, a co-op beat 'em game with all your favorite super heroes. This game is coming out on July 19th.
An interesting title with Zelda and Link in it is Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer which is available now; this is an RPG you play to the beat of music.
A series I think I might try this time is Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, coming in November.
Spyro Reignited trilogy - September 3rd
Doom Eternal - Coming soon
Wolfenstein Youngblood - July 26th
Dead by Daylight - September 24th
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered - Winter 2019
Dragon Quest Builders 2 - July 12th
Catan - June 20th
Super Mario Maker 2 - June 28th
This was one jam packed E3 direct and had something for everyone, no matter what type of games you like to play. I was so excited to see all the different studios who are now making games for the Switch, and seeing what Nintendo had to offer. The list I am most excited about (above) has some games that I have been wanting for awhile. Having this many games is exciting and makes me wonder what else they can bring out on the Switch next year! What were you most excited about this E3? What do you wish you would have seen announced?
